Since 1905 Italy hasn't been the same! It all started with a very special spumoni created and lovingly produced by Lezza Spumoni & Desserts, Inc. The origin of this spumoni is Naples, Italy and the recipe came to Chicago's West Side with Salvatore Lezza in 1905.
The recipe has been in the Lezza family for over 90 years. Salvatore handed the secret of genuine spumoni down to his son Victor. Today, three generations of the Lezza family -- the founder's grandsons Victor Jr., Edward and Jack, their mother Rosemarie, and greatgrandsons Louis and Eddie -- successfully run the company with that same old world flair. The secret of spumoni wasn't the only masterpiece passed down through the generations. Hundreds of recipes have been preserved and perfected keeping the Lezza tradition alive and flourishing. Quality is the key characteristic of Lezza Spumoni & Desserts and is fully apparent in every product they create. See for yourself. With the founder's recipes in mind, the Lezzas warn you that when you're in Italy, don't be surprised if you get homesick for Lezza Genuine Spumoni & Desserts!

ABOUT Original / Palermo Bakery
Fresh baked to order cookies, cakes and cannoli are our specialties. Palermo Bakery applies the highest standard of quality in purchasing ingredients to ensure our skilled bakers produce top quality baked goods. We candy our own oranges which are used for garnishing our delicate pastries or as part of ingredients in the making of our delicious amaretti (almond paste) cookies. We are a scratch bakery and everything we sell is made in house, from our cookies to our cannoli shells and filling.
If you are a business and you would like to carry or distribute our products please call 708.695.5998 and ask for Paula or Loreto. HISTORY The inspiration for Palermo Bakery originated in the town of Altavilla Milicia, on the north coast of Sicily in the province of Palermo. As a little boy there, Joe inherited the tradition of baking from his grandfather, who owned the bakery next to the City Hall. Family legend insists that Joe was actually born on the bakery table, as the family business expanded; Joe’s uncle built the Bar Greco, which continues to thrive in Altavilla today as the premier pasticceria and gelateria.
When Joe came to Chicago, he met and married Paula, also from Altavilla Milicia Together with Paula’s brother Loreto, the three of them worked on creating a bakery that would offer the finest delicacies of Sicilian pastry-making in Chicago and provide the most genuine Sicilian atmosphere outside of the island. “What people find here,” says Paula, is the real thing. Those who really know the culture enjoy coming here because it feels like home. But all of our customers like the warm welcome.

HISTORY Scafuri Bakery has a rich family history originating in Calabria, Italy. Our patriarch, Luigi Scafuri immigrated to Chicago in 1901 with his wife, Carmella, his first child, Frances, his father, Giovanni, and his love of Italian bakery.
In 1904, Luigi built a lasting tribute to his native culture – Scafuri Bakery. The bakery was an immediate success and became an integral part of a community, providing the neighborhood with its daily bread. Through the bakery, the family experienced the ups and downs of American history. During the Depression, Luigi was known to give out bread to families on Saturdays. Over the years Luigi, Carmella, and their seven children all contributed to a neighborhood tradition that would last into the next century.
When Luigi passed away in 1955, his daughter Annette Mategrano continued the family legacy. She and her husband, Pasquale, ran the bakery and nearby restaurants for the next 50 years. Annette like her father, was a revered and important member of the community, respected for her strength and generosity. She was 90 years old when the bakery first closed its doors in 2007.
The Scafuri family never lost its drive to be a staple member in the Taylor Street community. In 2010 Annette’s great-niece Michelle decided to continue the family tradition and return Scafuri Bakery back to the neighborhood. She recruited her niece Kelly to run the business and serve as the head of the bakery. With their joint effort, the building and business were re-established at 1337 W. Taylor Street after 5 years of construction and preparation. In May of 2013 the bakery opened with family pictures on the wall and classic recipes stocking the shelves. Come visit our historical site and our fresh baked goods and join the Scafuri family legacy.
