5 Italian Bakeries in Chicago That Taste Like Nonna's Kitchen: Palermo, Scafuri, Il Giardino del Dolce, Sicilian Bakery & New Paradise

Traditional Italian pastries and cannoli at Palermo Bakery in the Chicago area

Chicago’s Italian baking tradition is built on family recipes, early mornings, generous portions, and the belief that almost any occasion can be improved with a pastry. Over the decades, Italian immigrants and their families brought regional specialties from Sicily, Calabria, Palermo, and beyond to neighborhoods throughout Chicagoland: and those traditions continue to thrive today.

For the first post in our new bakery series, we are highlighting five real businesses listed in the CIAP Business Directory. Each bakery has its own story, specialties, and neighborhood following. Together, they offer a delicious look at the history, craftsmanship, and community spirit that make Italian American Chicago so special.

Bring an appetite. This list is not responsible for sudden cannoli cravings.

1. Palermo Bakery: Sicilian Tradition in the Chicago Area

Located at 7312 W. Irving Park Road in Norridge, Palermo Bakery is a family bakery inspired by the town of Altavilla Milicia, on the northern coast of Sicily in the province of Palermo.

The bakery’s story begins with Joe, who learned the baking tradition from his grandfather. Family legend even says Joe was born on the bakery table as the family business grew: a wonderfully Italian detail, and exactly the kind of family history that makes a bakery feel like home.

After Joe came to Chicago, he met and married Paula, who was also from Altavilla Milicia. Together with Paula’s brother Loreto, they built Palermo Bakery around a simple goal: bring genuine Sicilian pastry-making and a warm Sicilian atmosphere to the Chicago area.

Palermo is a scratch bakery. The team makes its cookies, cakes, cannoli shells, and fillings in-house, using carefully selected ingredients. The bakery even candies its own oranges for pastries and amaretti cookies.

What to order

Start with the classics:

  • Fresh-filled cannoli
  • Amaretti cookies
  • Sicilian pastries
  • Custom cakes
  • Fresh-baked cookies

If you searched for “palermo bakery chicago il,” this is the family-owned Chicago-area destination you want to know. Whether you are picking up a box for Sunday dinner or ordering a special cake, Palermo Bakery brings a taste of Sicily to every celebration.

2. Scafuri Bakery: A Little Italy Legacy Since 1904

At 1337 W. Taylor Street, Scafuri Bakery has been part of Chicago’s Little Italy community since 1904. That is more than a century of bread, pastries, family recipes, and neighbors stopping in for something sweet.

Scafuri’s roots trace back to Luigi Scafuri, who immigrated to Chicago from Calabria with his family. In 1904, he established the bakery as a lasting tribute to his Italian heritage. The business quickly became an important part of the neighborhood, providing daily bread and supporting local families.

During the Great Depression, Luigi was known for giving bread to families on Saturdays. That spirit of generosity continued through the generations. Five generations later, Scafuri remains focused not only on baking but also on creating a welcoming community space where people can connect over coffee and food.

The bakery closed its doors in 2007, but the family legacy was not finished. In 2010, Luigi’s great-niece Michelle began working to bring Scafuri back to Taylor Street. After years of construction and preparation, the bakery reopened in 2013, with family photographs on the walls and classic recipes filling the shelves.

What to order

Scafuri offers a mix of traditional and contemporary favorites, including:

  • Italian cookies
  • Fresh breads
  • Classic pastries
  • Cakes
  • Cannoli
  • Coffee and breakfast treats

For anyone searching “scafuri bakery chicago il,” the answer is a visit to historic Taylor Street. Come for a pastry, stay for the atmosphere, and take a moment to appreciate the family story behind the counter.

3. Il Giardino del Dolce: Italian Sweets Made Fresh

Italian pastries and sweets from Il Giardino del Dolce

Family-owned and operated since 1986, Il Giardino del Dolce is located at 2859 N. Harlem Avenue in Chicago. The bakery began as a gelato café and gradually developed into a neighborhood destination for traditional Italian cookies, cakes, pastries, and celebration desserts.

Today, il giardino del dolce continues to make its Italian bakery goods fresh seven days a week. The bakery has become a trusted choice for birthdays, weddings, parties, and the everyday moments that deserve a little sweetness.

There is something especially appealing about a bakery that can handle both sides of the Italian dessert experience: a carefully decorated cake for a major celebration and a small pastry picked up simply because you were nearby. You do not always need a milestone. Sometimes Tuesday is enough.

What to order

Consider trying:

  • Italian cookies
  • Traditional pastries
  • Gelato
  • Celebration cakes
  • Wedding and specialty desserts

If you are planning a family gathering or looking for an Italian bakery on Chicago’s Northwest Side, Il Giardino del Dolce offers dependable craftsmanship with a warm, neighborhood feel.

4. Sicilian Bakery: Old-Fashioned Recipes and a Family Legacy

Handmade Sicilian bakery goods and pastries from Sicilian Bakery, Inc.

At 4632 N. Cumberland Avenue, Sicilian Bakery, Inc. has been family owned and operated since the 1950s. The business began with Silvio Gagliardi, affectionately known as “Uncle Silvio,” and continues today under Phil Rubino and his son Anthony.

Phil’s connection to the bakery began after his family emigrated from Palermo, Sicily, in 1972. Phil was just 13 years old when he began visiting Uncle Silvio’s bakery after school and apprenticing under him. When Uncle Silvio passed away in 1977, Phil continued working, learning, and refining his craft until he took over the business in 1984.

With help from his mother, Francesca, Phil expanded the bakery’s selection while protecting its Sicilian foundation. New pastries, cakes, cookies, arancini, focaccia, and iris joined the traditional recipes. In 1996, the family opened the Cumberland Avenue location, which remains the bakery’s home today.

All four of Phil’s children grew up helping in the business. Anthony learned baking and cake decorating, later attending pastry and culinary arts school to help carry the family legacy into a new generation.

Everything is made by hand using original recipes and old-fashioned techniques passed down from Uncle Silvio and Francesca.

What to order

Sicilian Bakery is known for:

  • Arancini
  • Sicilian focaccia
  • Cannoli
  • Handcrafted breads
  • Sicilian-style pan pizza
  • Pastries and cookies
  • Iris and other Sicilian favorites

The bakery also features a cannoli bar, cozy indoor seating, and a patio. Follow along on Instagram at @cannolipertutti and call 773-589-2602 for more information.

This is the kind of place where a quick bakery stop can easily turn into lunch, dessert, and a conversation about whose family recipe is best. We recommend being prepared for all three.

5. New Paradise Bakery & Gelato: A Bridge Between Palermo and Chicago

Opened in March 2022 in Chicago’s Gladstone Park neighborhood, New Paradise Bakery & Gelato is located at 5742 N. Milwaukee Avenue. It is a bakery, gelateria, and deli created by owner and chef Vito Rubino, whose parents are from Palermo and who was born and raised in Chicago.

Vito’s vision was shaped by a dream he shared with his father: connect the United States with Italy. After running a pizzeria in Logan Square, he partnered with the owner of New Paradise Bakery in Palermo to bring Sicilian delicacies to Chicago.

The result is a lively gathering place filled with pastries, cakes, cookies, savory snacks, espresso, and gelato. Many ingredients: including cannoli shells, sheep’s-milk ricotta cream, and pistachio products: are imported from Sicily, while fresh local ingredients are used throughout the bakery.

New Paradise makes dozens of products from scratch each day. Its menu includes arancini, cannoli, sfogliatelle, almond cookies, and the signature brioche bun filled with gelato. The cannoli grande comes with traditional or pistachio ricotta filling in a fresh, crunchy shell. Cannoli flavors may include strawberry, coffee, chocolate, and “paradiso,” dipped in pistachio chocolate cream and rolled in pistachio flour and crumbles.

The bakery offers approximately 12 gelato flavors, including pistachio and nocciola. Regulars travel from Wisconsin and Indiana, and the room often sounds like an Italian family gathering: with tables from Milano, Roma, Palermo, and Chicago all meeting over brioche, cannoli, and espresso.

What to order

Do not leave without considering:

  • Cannoli grande
  • Pistachio or nocciola gelato
  • Brioche stuffed with gelato
  • Sfogliatelle
  • Arancini
  • Almond cookies
  • “Paradiso” cannoli

New Paradise is open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Check the official website before visiting for current information.
