When you exercise outdoors, you have the added benefit of experiencing the beauty of nature. You see and hear the birds. Your senses get drawn into your surroundings as you experience the richness of the air, sounds, smells and sights. Wherever you are – city, town or country – you can give your day the serene beginning you need. You might choose to walk or ride your bike instead of driving your car. You may choose to deflate at the end of your day by moving your body outside or sitting quietly in your backyard or on your porch. Lunchtime is a perfect time to get a quick workout in or bring your lunch and sit outside to catch some Vitamin D rays. While over exposure of the sun is not good for you, 20 minutes of sunlight each day is beneficial for your physical and mental well being. You can create your own ways of exercising in nature: gardening, hiking on a trail, quiet meditation and yoga outside or play an outdoor game with your family and friends. Take advantage of the sunlight before winter takes hold of North America where the days get shorter and the sun gets lower. Moving your body outside is more peaceful and natural while making few demands on the environment. So, get going! Enjoy the outdoors and burn calories while putting your body into action! You don't have to spend every waking moment in the gym to benefit. Here are a few to consider while enjoying your summer. *Hit the dirt. Working in your veggie garden or doing yard work is surprisingly great exercise. *Scrub-a-dub-dub. Ditch the car wash and do it yourself. You will soak up some vitamin D, get physical activity and you will have more energy. *Cut a rug. Invite some pals over, turn on some tunes, and have a dance party. *Put up the net. Outdoor games are fun and a great way to move your body while enjoying time with family and friends - like volleyball and badminton.
